Shade Trees_____________________________________
October Glory Red Maple- A Long Hollow favorite for fast growth, uniform shape, and nice fall color.   Grows to 40’ tall.

Legacy Sugar Maple-  Known as the “Queen of the Trees”, Legacies are slow growers but show brilliant fall color.  Grows to 70’ tall.

Pin Oak- One of the fastest hardwood trees, Pin Oaks are very drought tolerant and known to be good for privacy screens since they usually hold there leaves well into winter.  Low branching is one of the distinct characteristics of the Pin Oak. 

Willow Oak-  One of our best sellers.  Willow Oaks are known for their slender, Willow leaf that “simply blows into your neighbors yard.”  A true specimen tree. 

Lacebark Elm- A medium vase-shape tree with wide spreading branches and exfoliating bard make this Elm one of the best trees around.  Unusual and hard-to-find, these Dutch Elm Disease Resistant tree are making a comeback as one of the great American Trees. 

Seedless Sweetgum- A lot of homeowners are weary of Sweetgums due to their thorny seed balls, but Seedless varieties are available for this highly underused tree.   Southern Living says Sweetgums have some of the best fall color in the south…and we agree.

Tulip Poplar-  The State Tree of Tennessee offers great yellow fall color, fast growth,  open branching and small Tulip-like blooms.  Young Poplars tend to be brittle and numerous young trees died during the late freeze of 2004.  Due to that, Long Hollow typically only carries larger sizes for guaranteed success. 

Evergreen or Screening Trees____________________
Green Giant Arborvitae- Fast growing and pest resistant, the Green Giant is a very popular choice for creating privacy screens.   Grows 25’ tall by 8’ wide.

Cryptomeria- Sometimes call Japanese Cedar, Cryptomerias are fine textured and ‘lacey’ evergreens.  Fast growing and very unique. Grows 25’ tall.

Nellie Stevens Holly-  Nothing out performs Nellie Stevens Holly in difficult areas.  Nellies have dark green and lush leaves with fairly sharp spines.  The advantages of this evergreen is that they have shown to do quite well in shade.  Grows 20’tall.

Virginia Pine- A great, drought tolerant, native pine that grows 50’+.  Unlike White Pines, which are being greatly affected by blight, Virginia Pines are very hardy and very hard-to-find.  Long Hollow carries Virginia Pine seasonally. 

Flowering or Ornamental Trees_____________________
Trident Maple- A small to medium tree that offers great yellow to orange fall color and very unique branching.  Very rare and hard-to-find, Tridents get their name from their leaves with three pronounced lobes.  Grows to 25’ tall.

Dogwood- It wouldn’t be spring without Dogwoods.  The Native white dogwood prefers a protected placement with some afternoon shade or filtered light.  Dogwoods are known to bloom around Easter, have biblical significance, and be a great native understory tree.  Long Hollow carries a variety of Dogwoods seasonally including the Native White and Pink.  In stock year round is the ‘Constellation Dogwood’ know its brilliant white flowers and for being more sun tolerant and less susceptible to Dogwood Anthracnose.  

Redbud- A native favorite known as the first to bloom.  Drive down Long Hollow Pike in late February and early March and you will see the understory tree blooming deep pink in the wood lines.  Long Hollow also carries the ‘Forest Pansy’ Redbud known for its wine colored leaves and seen throughout the Indian Lake area of Hendersonville.   

Flowering Cherry- Yoshino and Okame Cherries are A+ smaller trees with beautiful spring blooms.  Yoshinos flower a very pale pink to white small flower and are a Long Hollow favorite.  Great to use around patios or to line a parking area or short drive. 

Winter King Hawthorne- Snow white spring blooms, lush summer foliage, good fall color, and brilliant red winter berries…need we say more? Winter King’s are quite possible the best small tree and thus very hard to find.  Long Hollow not only grows them, but we hand select from our growers in the winter.  Available seasonally.
