Flowering Shrubs__________________________________
Knock Out Roses- One of our most popular plants.  This hardy, disease resistant rose is covered with blooms from late spring until Thanksgiving.  Plant them in at least half a days worth of full sun in front of some taller evergreens and you’ll have excellent curb appeal for most of the year.  They will grow to about 4-5 feet tall and should be trimmed in the winter.

Carpet Roses- Another long-blooming, easy-care rose that perform very well in this area.  The advantage to the Carpet Rose is it stays smaller and lower than the Knock Out Rose.  Bloom Color includes reds, pinks, yellows, and white.  Our favorite is ‘Scarlet’.

Encore Azaleas- Encores have excellent characteristics for the Southern home landscape: nice evergreen leaves and they bloom in both Spring and Fall.  Bloom color includes reds, pinks, purples, and white.  Additionally, Encores nice compact size (3-4 ft).  They are very particular about the soil they are planted in so make sure to get some pine soil conditioner and follow our Azalea Care Sheet and planting instructions.

Hydrangeas- A true southern favorite.   Hydrangeas have large summer blooms that make gorgeous accents for your home or great cut arrangements for inside.  Endless Summer and Blushing Bride varieties are best in afternoon shade and grow to 4 feet tall.  Oakleaf, Limelight, Tardiva, and Annabelle can handle more sun and typically grow larger.  You can see all of these varieties in our Garden and around the Farmhouse Design Studio at Long Hollow Gardens & Nursery.

Cotoneasters- Low growing evergreen shrubs with small white spring flowers and red fall berries.  They only grow to 2 feet tall but can spread to 4-6 feet wide.  Cotoneasters make a great full groundcover.  For added texture and color they are best planted in front of lower growing evergreens, like Otto Luyken Laurels.

Perennials________________________________________
Switch Grass- A native grass showing graceful blue-tinged foliage and small airy plumes in the summer.  These clumps grow to around 3 feet tall and require very little care.  Cut them back in February after enjoying the champagne colored foliage all winter.

Native Coneflower -Daisy-like blooms all summer until frost in colors of pinks, purples, and white.  One plant will grow to a 3 foot clump after usually the second season.  They tolerate sun and drought very well.

Native Black Eyed Susan- Bright golden yellow petals with a dark center.  Very sun and drought tolerant, these pretty flowers add a burst of color all summer.  They also grow to be a 3 foot clump.

Sedums- Great sun and drought tolerant plants that almost have succulent like foliage.  Typically blooming in the late summer the mauve pink flowers are fragrant and add interest when most other perennials start to wane. They come in many varieties.

Perennial Ferns- Great accents for a shady landscape.  Adding a softness of texture and creating a woodsy feel, there are many varieties available with varying colors of foliage.
